Description
Whitestone was constructed in 1902-03 for a member of one of the founding families of Newport, the King family. It is unique and on the National Register for 2 reasons: It's entry is off-centered on the front of the building and its mortared exterior walls with white stones added while the mortar was still wet, from which the building takes its name. The former carriage house of the estate still sits today around the corner on Rhode Island Ave., similarly constructed. The former, well-known New York architectural firm of McKim, Meade and White was the architect of Whitestone. We understand Sanford White was the architect assigned by the firm to do the building's design. The firm designed many, many of Newport's famous structures, including the Tennis Hall of Fame and Casino. The building is also within the jurisdiction of Newport's Historic District Commission, which seeks to protect and preserve it's history and character. one-of-a-kind, located on a quiet street w/Bellevue Ave. shops & Easton's Beach a stroll away. Gracious high ceiling, 4FPs, light-filled, park grounds & parking.
