What to Consider When Moving from a Big City to a Smaller Town

There are many reasons why people choose to leave a big city to move to a smaller town – whether it has to do with family reasons, a new job, or just looking for a change of scenery. This move will feel like a big transition but change and starting a new chapter is always exciting! Here are some tips that you should keep in mind and consider when making this move:

  • Find a neighborhood that is a good fit. Chances are there is a specific town or county that you are looking to move to. Make sure to take the time to explore neighborhoods within the towns that you are looking at to ensure that the neighborhood you choose is a good fit. It can be helpful to discuss neighborhoods and ways of life with your realtor, or if you are able to speak to residents, that is also helpful!
  • Learn about cost of living. Look at cost of living for the specific town that you are looking at to make sure that it fits within your budget. Bigger cities tend to have a much higher cost of living than a smaller town, but it is still vital to research and make sure that you will be living within your means.
  • Consider purchasing a car. Many people opt to not have a vehicle when living in a bigger city, as public transportation, walking, or biking tends to be more convenient. If you are moving to a smaller town, you may want to explore or consider purchasing a car for yourself or for you and your partner to share!
  • Know that life may slow down. Finally, recognize that moving to a smaller town will force you to slow down, which is not a bad thing! By leaving your city, you will be saying goodbye to the hustle and bustle and saying hello to a more relaxed, suburban lifestyle!
