The new year is right around the corner, and with that comes the thought of New Year’s resolutions on how we can self-improve for the year ahead. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, everyone is different in terms of what they are looking to change or improve upon. For many, resolutions can include eating healthier, exercising more, or saving money.
If you are a homeowner, perhaps you are thinking about resolutions that can improve the space in your home. Regardless of your resolution, it is important that you ensure that it is attainable and something that will positively impact you and your everyday life.
For homeowners, we have pulled together some of the best (attainable!) New Year’s resolutions that you can consider for 2023.
New Year’s Resolution #1: Create a routine for cleaning.
If you do not regularly clean your home, it can become an extremely overwhelming task. One of the best ways to keep up with cleaning is to set a routine, or a schedule, for your home. Your cleaning routine can be daily, weekly, and even monthly, which will ultimately help you to avoid becoming overwhelmed and stressed.
For example, while you might wipe down counters daily, you may choose to deep clean appliances or dust on a weekly basis. Figure out what works best for you, your family, and everyone’s schedule, and divide and conquer!
New Year’s Resolution #2: Declutter.
Decluttering is time consuming, but extremely necessary! Make sure that you are taking time to get rid of anything that you do not need or want anymore, and that you are not replacing or repurchasing any products until you truly need them. This will ensure that you are only storing items that are regularly used, and that you can easily account for everything that you have on hand. This is especially true for any products that expire, as the more you stock up, the less likely it will be that you will get to use them before their expiration date.
In this same notion, take the time to make sure that everything has its own “home” and has a place where it should be stored. By placing things where they belong, and making sure things are put away and stored properly, you are staying organized and avoiding misplacing anything or extra clutter building up.
New Year’s Resolution #3: Keep a donation box handy.
As you are working on decluttering, keep a donation box handy so that you can easily throw in any items that you will want to donate after you are finished going through each of your rooms. If you keep this box handy, then you can easily throw in additional items throughout the week or month that you will want to donate. Then, you can choose a time that is convenient for you to drop everything off and refill the box the next week or month.
You can also choose to have a box for selling handy, if you find that you would prefer to list the item on a selling website or app instead of donating.
New Year’s Resolution #4: Keep up on dusting.
One of the most important aspects of cleaning your home include dusting, which is, for many people, their least favorite activity! Ultimately, dusting will help to improve your indoor air quality, so it is extremely important that you keep up with the dust not only for a clean environment, but also for you and your family’s health. Check your HVAC system and change any filters you have regularly, so you can avoid any dust flying through the air.
New Year’s Resolution #5: Cut down on the use of energy.
Try to make an effort to cut down on the use of energy as best as you can – whether that is shutting a light off when you leave the room or turning off the water while you are brushing your teeth. Cutting energy wherever you can will add up and make a difference!
